Press Ratings
ANIMAtION AVANTGARDE was initiated by Thomas Renoldner, developed together with Daniel Ebner and Wiktoria Pelzer, and curated by them during the years 2010 and 2011. ANIMATION AVANTGARDE is a cooperative project of ASIFA Austria and VIS -  Vienna Independent Shorts Filmfestival.
I think it is of international importance that the ANIMATION AVANTGARDE program exists with such a strong and clear programming bias. This is not usual. Fortunately, there are now a number of festivals that give a fair share to "avantgarde", or "experimental" or "non-narrative" animation., but I don't think there is any other that specializes in "non-main stream animation" like ANIMATION AVANTGARDE at VIS does. (...)I see it as very positive that the ANIMATION AVANTGARDE programs are part of a wider short film festival where eyperimental film making seems to have a fair share. This is a personal dada but I never see it as positive when animation tries to remain enclosed in a world of its own. It inevitably leads to compromises with mainstream animation and with the tyranny of comedy and laughter. I think it is much better when it reaches across boundaries and especially when it keeps a creative connection with non-animation experimental and creative film-making as with the various contemporary practices in the visual arts.Pierre Hébert, Montréal, June 2011
